( Continues from How Innovative Can You Be?)
Innovation, the conversion of the abstract to tangible valuable, is a must-have not only in management and business, but also in leadership.
Steve Jobs once said from a leadership standpoint,
Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower.
Profound as it seems however, Innovation starts with little things we do in our everyday lives. For instance,
Creativity is Innovation!
What is Creativity?
But how do we define creativity?
From Human Motivation, 3rd ed., by Robert E. Franken,
Creativity is defined as the tendency to generate or recognize ideas, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others, and entertaining ourselves and others. (page 396)
Naturally, people tend to view creativity through the lens of stupendous display of talent, and in terms of great inventions alone.
The Magic Wand …
Contrary to popular opinion however, creativity is expressed in the little things we do in our everyday lives.
For instance, creativity is articulated in our daily lives each time we
– see old regular things in new light
– see new opportunities in routine and mundane (i.e. ordinary) things of everyday life
– see fresh possibilities in seemingly challenging situations and difficulties we face.
Therefore, we need to start discovering new and exciting prospects to our everyday lives and circumstances for innovation to be evident through us.
How to Develop the Creative Spirit:
But how can we develop the creative spirit?
– Looking out for fresh opportunities in events and challenges of everyday,
– Looking out for new angles or twists to regular mundane and ordinary things, and
– Looking on everything from the bright side.
Nonetheless, if any man lacks Wisdom, let him ask God!
James 1.5 (KJV) If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God…
Lord, Your word says that there is a spirit in man, and Your breathe does inspire (Jb. 32:8). Please breathe on me afresh. Once again, please light my candle and enlighten my darkness.
Open my eyes of understanding, and let me begin to see fresh opportunities, great possibilities, exciting twists to mundane, ordinary, and even challenging everyday events and circumstances surrounding my life.
For that is the beginning, end and the whole essence of creativity and innovation.
Please grant that the innovative and creative spirit be birthed in me. Amen.
